Susan G Komen

Susan G Komen

In 1980, Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became the Susan G. Komen® organization and the beginning of a global movement. What was started with $200 and a shoebox full of potential donor names has now grown into the world’s largest nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer. To date, we’ve invested more than $2.9 billion in groundbreaking research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 60 countries. Our efforts helped reduce deaths from breast cancer by 40 percent between 1989-2016 and we won’t stop until our promise is fulfilled.

The Play Equity Fund (Established by the LA 84 Foundation)

The Play Equity Fund is focused on bringing the transformational power of sport and play to all children, regardless of their race, gender, zip code, or socioeconomic status. The Play Equity Fund is the only nonprofit focused solely on Play Equity as a social justice issue. The Play Equity Fund was established by The LA84 Foundation as its 501(c)3 public charity partner. The LA84 Foundation was established in 1983 to manage Southern California’s share of the surplus from the highly successful 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The Play Equity Fund is inspired by the data and statistics that indicate the lack of equal access to sports for kids is a crisis hidden in plain sight, and research clearly shows the importance of sports and structured play in kid’s lives. Equal access to sports is a social justice issue. The importance of Play Equity to support kids and communities demands finding sustainable solutions. The Play Equity Fund is the cornerstone of this movement.
