Depression significantly impacts many lives, with women experiencing it at roughly twice the rate of men in the US. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly 10% of adult women in the United States report symptoms of depression each year, compared to about 5% of men.
BAPS Charities organized a health awareness lecture for women in Parsippany, NJ, on May 19, 2024, to raise awareness on this topic. Dr. Asha Patel educated attendees on potential causes, recognizing the signs and symptoms of depression as well as addressing the stigma around mental health in the community. The event featured a discussion among multiple generations of women on supporting each other and loved ones with depression, emphasizing the importance of awareness and destigmatization. The lecture underscored the need for an open dialogue and support networks to help improve the well-being of women of all ages.
