On June 23, 2024, BAPS Charities hosted its annual “In the Joy of Others: Walk-Run” in Melbourne, FL. This event aimed to support three local charities: The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Charity, The Children’s Hunger Project, and The Brevard Basket Brigade. Community members came together to walk, run, and raise awareness for these important causes.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Charity helps our law enforcement officers and firefighters during tough times, such as medical emergencies or line-of-duty deaths. The Children’s Hunger Project ensures local kids have food on weekends and during summer breaks. The Brevard Basket Brigade supports families in need during the holidays.
Nearly 250 people joined the cause this year, including Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey, West Melbourne City Councilman John Dittimore, Judge Jigisa Dookoo, Chief Deputy Sheriff Michael DeMorat, and the Space Coast Boy Scouts. Participants of all ages, from youth to seniors, united for a common purpose.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Michael DeMorat thanked everyone for their support, emphasizing the importance of community efforts. The Executive Director of The Children’s Hunger Project, Cheryl Cominsky, expressed gratitude for the continued support since the walkathon began in Melbourne. Amanda Thurn from The Brevard Basket Brigade was thrilled to be a part of the event and looks forward to future collaborations.
The walk-run promoted a healthier lifestyle and highlighted the power of collective action in addressing local challenges.
