Approximately every 9 minutes, someone in the United States dies of leukemia. Bone marrow transplants are crucial in fighting blood cancer and other illnesses and are also key in bolstering immune systems to restore them to normal after high doses of chemotherapy and radiation. No individual or family wants to receive the call that a loved one has been diagnosed with a disease like leukemia, lymphoma, or other non-cancerous disorders. Additionally, no family supporting a cancer patient through chemotherapy wants to hear that their loved one’s recovery may be delayed due to a lack of bone marrow required for their immune system to regenerate.
To help address the shortfall and raise awareness about the uses of bone marrow and its importance in transplants, BAPS Charities, in partnership with Be The Match, organized a Bone Marrow Drive in Houston, Texas on September 11, 2022. The event added 66 individuals to the national registry.
