On August 4, 2024, BAPS Charities hosted its first ever “In the Joy of Others: Walk-Run” in Dothan, AL, benefiting The Firefighter Cancer Support Network for Alabama and Reach Out and Read Alabama. This year’s walk united nearly 130 community members, including former Dothan Mayor Mike Smith, District 2 Commissioner Aristotle Kirkland, and a few other well-known locals, to support “The Firefighter Cancer Support Network for Alabama” and “Reach Out and Read Alabama.” These organizations are committed to providing support and resources to firefighters battling cancer and improving literacy among children, fostering a love for reading.
Curtis Dunn from the Firefighter Cancer Support Network reflected on the event’s significance: “Almost two-thirds of the firefighters battling fires today will be battling cancer tomorrow. A meaningful contribution can help firefighters because supporters like you help The Firefighter Cancer Support Network.”
The event not only encouraged participants to lead a healthier lifestyle but also served as a reminder of the profound impact collective efforts can have in addressing local needs and challenges.
