Over the weekend of March 6-8, 2013, volunteers of BAPS Charities and over 1,000 leaders from public, private and non-profit organizations convened for the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) Summit in Washington, DC. Led by honorary chairwoman First Lady Michelle Obama, the PHA Summit brought many influential facets together in a committed effort to solving the childhood obesity crisis in America.
After successfully developing and implementing Children’s Health and Safety Days (CHASD) across the nation last year, BAPS Charities was able to provide a unique view on how a purely non-profit group can dynamically better the lives of children, starting with the basics of a healthy diet, staying physically active and decreasing screen time. These were all conveyed via workshops and activities held at various centers, coast to coast.
The team from BAPS Charities was able to connect with leaders of the children’s health movement and converge on ideas while building the foundation to build future partnerships. A highlight of the event included a keynote speech from First Lady Michelle Obama, a well-known champion of children’s health initiatives. Mrs. Obama conveyed a moving message to the audience and Americans throughout the nation to take on the challenge to raise healthy children. She thanked organizations such as BAPS Charities who are taking an active role in this movement to ensure a brighter future through its children’s health initiatives. Honorable speakers included Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, NJ as well as 2 time NFL Champion, Eli Manning of the New York Giants.
