Food Drive 2024 in Boston, MA

Food insecurity remains a significant challenge for millions of households across the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), 13.5% of American households—approximately 18 million—faced food insecurity in 2023, marking an increase from 12.8% in 2022. The impact is particularly severe in cities like Greater Boston, where recent studies show that one in eight households struggles to access sufficient, nutritious food. Children are disproportionately affected, with nearly 14 million nationwide living in food-insecure households last year. The USDA defines food insecurity as the lack of consistent access to affordable, nutritious food, posing serious implications for the health and well-being of vulnerable families.

In response to this pressing issue, BAPS Charities organized a Food Drive from November 23 to December 30 in Lowell, MA. Volunteers collected over 2,700 pounds of non-perishable food items, which were donated to the Merrimack Valley Food Bank. Serving thousands of individuals and families, the food bank plays a critical role in addressing food insecurity in the region. The Food Drive’s inauguration by Massachusetts State Representative Vanna Howard underscored the importance of collective action in tackling this challenge and highlighted the community’s commitment to supporting those in need.

“Thank you for your outstanding efforts in bringing hope to our neighbors facing food insecurity. Your generosity and support provide care and compassion, particularly during the holiday season, helping to ensure that those in need have access to meals,” expressed Debbie Callery, Executive Director of Merrimack Valley Food Bank.

This initiative was part of a broader effort by BAPS Charities, which held food drives across North America to support local families and individuals during the holiday season.
