On August 11, 2024, BAPS Charities hosted its annual “In the Joy of Others: Walk-Run” in Birmingham, AL, in support of The Firefighter Cancer Support Network for Alabama and Reach Out and Read Alabama. Nearly 300 community members gathered for the event, including Hoover Council President John Lyda, Pelham Council President Maurice Mercer, District 47 Alabama State Representative Mike Shaw, Colbert County Commissioner Tommy Barnes, former Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill, Chief Deputy Tax Assessor of Jefferson County John Powe, Jefferson County Tax Assessor Gaynell Hendricks, and other prominent locals. The walk aimed to raise awareness and support for these two important causes: helping firefighters battling cancer and promoting literacy in children through a love of reading.
Pelham Council President Maurice Mercer highlighted the event’s importance, stating, “Our community thrives when we support one another. Your commitment to community service is just as vital as your commitment to fitness. Today, your support for the Firefighter Cancer Support Network and Reach Out and Read Alabama is commendable.”
The walk not only encouraged participants to embrace a healthier lifestyle but also showcased the power of collective efforts in addressing critical community needs.
