Diabetes is increasingly seen globally due to changing lifestyles. Diabetes is one of the costliest disease and it brings acute and chronic complications with it. It is a major risk factor for heart disease. Diabetes usually comes in body silently after many years of pre-diabetes status and does not cause symptoms; so many people are unaware that they have diabetes.
Out of the estimated 20.8 million people in the United States living with diabetes, the American Diabetes Association said 6.2 million are unaware that they have it. Diabetes is the main cause of kidney failure, new-onset blindness and limb amputation. Most deaths from diabetes occur from heart complications caused by obesity, hardening of the arteries and high blood pressure. Blindness is another complication. Diabetes causes high blood sugar levels.
BAPS Charities Health Awareness lecture organized at over 50 locations on November 13, 2011 helped hundreds of participants to learn more about this disease and take precautionary measure to improve their health.
