Health and well-being typically focus on physical attributes: weight, blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol, etc. However, over the past few years, a growing body of knowledge has pointed to the importance of maintaining good mental health as well. Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. 1 in 5 adults in the United States experiences mental illness each year. To help raise attention and awareness regarding mental health, BAPS Charities organized a health awareness lecture in Albany, New York on March 13, 2022.
The health awareness lecture, presented by Dr. Dhaval Swaminarayan, focused on recognizing early signs of poor mental health in children and adults, and appropriate treatment paths. Topics covered included dealing with the psychological distress of the COVID-19 pandemic, recognizing stress, understanding anxiety, depression, and the link between mental and physical health. Attendees were left with a better understanding of mental health and overcoming the stigmas related to discussing mental health.
