Every year, 5 June is celebrated by millions internationally as World Environment Day (WED). It is the UN’s most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.
BAPS Charities observed World Environment Day in the UK with a public awareness presentation supporting this year’s theme, Beating Plastic Pollution.
The presentation was delivered at all BAPS Charities centres around the UK between 2 and 10 June. It comprised eye-opening facts and inspirational tips about reducing single-use plastic consumption.
DID YOU KNOW: The human race today consumes resources the equivalent of 1.5 planets. If current consumption and production patterns remain the same, and with a rising population, we will need two planets by 2030 to accommodate our ways of living and consumption. This is simply unsustainable. – United Nations Environment Programme |
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) says the theme is a call to action for all of us to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time. World Environment Day 2018 invites us all to consider how we can make changes in our everyday lives to reduce the heavy burden of plastic pollution on our natural places, our wildlife – and our own health.
The presentation concluded by echoing the words of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, that individual actions when multiplied can have an exponential impact on the planet. Together, we can make a difference.
