BAPS Charities organised a national 5-a-side football tournament for youths, the Yagnapurush Cup, on Saturday 15 June 2024 at Powerleague Barnet in London.
16 teams and more than 100 participants from local communities across the UK joined together with enthusiasm and healthy competitiveness for an event that provided enjoyment and fostered tremendous community spirit throughout.
The tournament began with the group matches that provided plenty of entertainment as well as talent. The top two teams from each group progressed to the quarter-finals of the Yagnapurush Cup, with the third- and fourth-placed teams being entered into the quarter-finals of the Pragji Cup.
The group games provided fabulous entertainment, with many games being played at such a fast pace, and so many goals being scored.
In the semi-finals of the Yagnapurush Cup, Leicester A overcame a resilient South London A team with a narrow victory, getting through to the final with a 1-0 win. The second semi-final was another close encounter with Harrow-Brent A beating East London 2-1.
The semi-finals of the Pragji cup saw Harrow-Brent B overcoming South East London, and in the second semi-final, Harrow-Brent C got over the line against Wellingborough with a 1-0 victory.
The final of the Pragji Cup between Harrow-Brent B and Harrow-Brent C was a tense game finishing 1-0 to Harrow-Brent B.
The final of the much-coveted Yagnapurush Cup was contested between Leicester A vs Harrow-Brent A. Leicester A, battling with injuries, took a 2-1 lead approaching the latter stages of the game. A moment of sheer talent proved to be a pivotal moment in the game and opened the doors for Harrow-Brent A to conjure a dramatic turnaround. Harrow-Brent A were the eventual winners by winning the final 4-2, ensuring it was a clean sweep of both trophies for Harrow-Brent.
The popular event encouraged exercise for youths leading busy lifestyles and helped to enhance community relations between youths from various towns and cities around the country.
