BAPS Charities was requested by the Rotary Club of Edgware & Stanmore to support a health awareness drive at Broadwalk Shopping Centre in Edgware, London on Saturday 25 April 2015.
A medical screening team from BAPS Charities joined volunteers from the Edgware & Stanmore Rotary Club. Together they examined 51 males and 53 females from a variety of ethnic groups, spanning an age range from 15 to 85 years.
Screenings included measurements of blood pressure and body mass index, and a consultation thereafter. Medical equipment was provided by BAPS Charities.
Amongst the 104 shoppers assessed during a five-hour period, 15 were diabetics (including 10 of Asian origin) and an additional 39 reported family history of high blood pressure or stroke. 20 cases of high blood pressure amongst the sample were identified, 9 of which were of Asian origin. The results of the body mass index were also noteworthy; only 20 recorded a normal result with 17 cases classified as clinically obese.
The event also helped raise awareness amongst the public about potential health risks and healthy lifestyle choices.
The Mayor of Brent, Cllr Ajay Maru, attended the event to see first-hand the service being offered in the borough. He was very appreciative of the voluntary work offered by BAPS Charities for members of the local community.
Members of the Rotary Club and their president were also grateful to BAPS Charities for providing a professional and friendly service throughout the day, and hoped to continue the partnership to benefit more people in the community.
