On Wednesday, 17 June 2015, BAPS Charities volunteers from Cape Town, South Africa, visited the Lehlohonolo Educare Centre. This impoverished child day care facility is situated in Old Crossroads, and is surrounded by the informal settlements of Guguletu and Manenburg. 40 children ranging in age from 1 month to 6 years are currently being taken care of.
BAPS Charities volunteers were heartily welcomed by the sweet melodious singing of the children. In a humble effort to bring warmth to their lives, each child was provided with a set of clothing consisting of a blanket, warm woollen hat, pair of gloves, track suit pants and jacket, raincoat, scarf and underwear. Chairs and tables were given to the facility so that each and every child is able to sit at a table and no longer has to sit on the cold, bare floor during daily activities. Sufficient groceries such as cereals, rice, beans, lentils, peanut butter, jam and other non perishables were provided so that the children are able to receive meals at the centre for at least 2 months. The children were also served a piping hot meal on the day as well as given little treats such as chocolates and chips. The caregivers were also very touched and kept expressing their gratitude throughout our visit.
Our support will go a long way in ensuring that the crèche remains a vital part of the community, affording impoverished parents the opportunity of invaluable child care, so that they may go to work and create better lives for themselves and their families.
