As part of BAPS Charities’ international effort to mitigate the spread of the Covid-19 virus and to alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable within our society, BAPS Charities South Africa embarked on a number of relief drives during the first week of the national lock-down period effected by the South African government.
Our passionate team of young volunteers successfully managed to deliver much needed food and supplies to thousands in a short span of time in Johannesburg, Lenasia and surrounding areas. Personal hygiene kits that included soap, hand sanitiser, toothpaste and toothbrushes were delivered to newly-sheltered homeless individuals. Food parcels and bulk grocery items were donated to organisations supporting the aged, orphaned and vulnerable members of society as well as those residing in informal dwellings.
BAPS Charities also provided daily hot meals in rural areas such as the interior of the Limpopo province through its volunteer corps. Mattresses and bedding have also been provided to shelters currently housing the homeless in the Mayfair area of Johannesburg.
We are grateful to local government and community leaders in the Mayfair, Lenasia, Tzaneen and Turfontein areas for their support in these projects. We are equally beholden to our volunteers for their contribution during this difficult time.
BAPS Charities will extend its relief work nationwide in the days to come and seeks the support of all South Africans and well-wishers in this endeavour.
