On 19th February 2022, BAPS Charities Nairobi visited the world famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve to assist the local Maasai communities bordering the reserve and surrounding conservancies in a unique way.
As humans encroach wildlife territories, human-wildlife conflict naturally increases. Wild carnivorous animals from the reserves look to attack easy prey such as goats, sheep, and cattle in the Maasai Boma homesteads. This gives rise to herders killing those wild animals in retaliation, hoping the incidences do not reoccur. Sadly wild animals keep coming back.
A great solution of solar powered flashing lights installed around domestic animal enclosures within the Maasai Bomas has proven to significantly decrease such incidences. The flashing lights deter wild carnivores by giving the impression a human is patrolling the enclosure. Both the wild carnivores and the Maasai communities benefit from this solution.
BAPS Charities volunteers together with a local team that installs the lights, went to homesteads on the outskirts of the Maasai Mara reserve to donate the light kits. 4 such light kits were installed in 4 Maasai Bomas, helping those families to drastically reduce conflict incidences in the future.
The Maasai families receiving the installed kits were highly appreciative of this kind gesture. BAPS Charities looks to assist more communities in the future with such solutions.
