In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, BAPS Charities volunteers from across North America and the world have sought ways to support frontline workers and assist those who are most vulnerable in this unprecedented situation. In Houston, BAPS Charities’ initiatives have been active since April. Below is a brief summary of some of the organization’s activities which were noticed by Congressman Pete Olson (TX-22), who presented the Certificate of Congressional Recognition to BAPS Charities for its “heroic efforts helping Texans in need during the COVID-19 Pandemic.”
BAPS Charities Donates $2,500 To Fort Bend Family Promise
One of the ancillary effects of the pandemic has been the increased stressors put on low-income families associated with costs for housing, healthcare, and other necessities. Fort Bend Family Promises (FBFP) has for years provided shelter, meals, and comprehensive support to struggling families to the local community. In recognition of their work, which is now more than ever critical, BAPS Charities made a $2500 contribution to FBFP. Missouri City Councilman Anthony Muralis and Anna O’Neal, daughter of NBA legend Shaquille O’Neil and herself a committed supporter of FBFP, were present to accept the gift. Councilman Muralis said, “Thank you BAPS [Charities] and to all of you who joined today. You are awesome!”.
BAPS Charities Shows Support To Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels Program with $2,500 Donation
On May 12, 2020, BAPS Charities contributed $2500 to the Fort Bend Seniors (FBS) Meals on Wheels program in recognition of the critical work they are performing through this pandemic. The Coronavirus outbreak has been an especially challenging time for program coordinators at FBS, due to the closure of the center, but the staff’s “can-do” attitude has allowed the Meals on Wheels program to continue and serve any senior in need. On any given weekday, the program provides over 1,400 boxed meals by staff and volunteer drivers.
Leah Ghobrial, Deputy Executive Director of FBS and County Judge Robert Hebert, a longtime volunteer at FBS were present to accept the donation. Ms. Ghobrial noted that by seeing the youthfulness of BAPS Charities volunteers participating in these charitable activities, it “keeps Fort Bend Seniors young at heart.”
BAPS Charities Donates 1,500 N95 Masks To Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office
After having earlier donating 1,500 N95 masks to the country offices for use by essential masks, BAPS Charities provided another 1,500 N95 masks to the for the staff at the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office on May 8, 2020. Ready access to effective personal protective equipment (PPE) continues to be a key safety consideration for County Constables. Sheriff Troy Nehls was deeply appreciative of the donation and accepted the donations on behalf of the entire office.
Gift Cards, Water Provided to Fort Bend Social Services For Distribution To Residents
BAPS Charities delivered pallets of bottled water and gift cards for groceries and household supplies to the Fort Bend County Social Services offices for distribution to struggling local residents. These timely material contributions were recognized by County officials who found the donation very timely as the needs from community residents continue to increase.
Beyond the donations, BAPS Charities has organized and implemented several online awareness campaigns for the community on how to stay healthy and safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
