Massive wildfires have swept through the city of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada leading to the emergency evacuation of nearly 80,000 people who have fled their homes.
On Monday, May 2, 2016, strong and shifting winds caused nearby forest fires to turn suddenly towards Fort McMurray in northern Alberta. As a result, many people were forced to follow a mandatory evacuation. People evacuating the city were limited to only one major highway as they drove towards safety. Vehicles headed south towards Edmonton were able to feel the heat through the windows as growing flames blew towards the road. Many families, some with children, had to flee their homes leaving their precious memories behind. When the fires eventually die down, hundreds will not have a home to return to.
BAPS Charities has mobilized its volunteer force in Edmonton to address the immediate needs of those affected by the wildfires. Volunteers are coordinating relief efforts to provide emergency shelter, food, and transportation to hundreds of distressed people.
Your generous support can help these volunteers provide assistance where it is needed the most in a timely manner.
