On 1st February 2022, BAPS Charities Nairobi donated Ladies garments to Mathari national teaching and referral hospital.
The hospital was established in 1910 by the British colonial government as a lunatic asylum. In 1924 it was made a mental hospital mainly admitting native Africans patients.
The hospital has a bed capacity of 700 although at times the patient population grows to over 800. It is the largest psychiatric hospital in Kenya in terms of patient population. It is also the largest Kenya teaching and referral hospital handling all cases of mental illness both inpatients and outpatients.
During the donations exercise, BAPS Charities donated 480 pieces of Ladies garments. Most patients admitted in the hospital are from poor social backgrounds lacking in most basic needs including clothing. The hospital has a programme of reintegration of the abandoned patients where it traces their homes in order to repatriate them.
Appreciating the volunteers during the event, the Head of Nursing, Paul Mwove commented, “Many of the patients are in need of clothing especially during repatriation, this assistance in form of clothing for these disadvantaged patients is very welcome.
