BAPS Charities in Oxford, UK, collected winter food for the homeless in December 2019, as part of an on-going commitment to serve the needy in the local community.
More than two hundred kilograms of individual food items – including long-life milk, soups, tinned food and rice – were collected and deposited at Fitzharry School in Abingdon. These were then distributed to the Abingdon and Didcot foodbanks, which have been set up “to meet the needs of people who are going through a period of crisis and are struggling to feed themselves and their families.”
Shefali Patel, a lead volunteer for BAPS Charities, shared, “Christmas is usually a time of celebration and merriment, but as reality dictates, there are many families who will have less or no food at this time of the year. We hope the generosity of the local community will provide some support and comfort to those without a roof over their heads or who are experiencing financial hardship.”
Hilary Beale thanked BAPS Charities on behalf of Abingdon Foodbank. She said, “Abingdon Foodbank were delighted to receive a wonderful load of food initiated by the BAPS Charities, Oxford. This very welcome gesture of community support is much appreciated by the Foodbank and will be used to ensure their clients receive food parcels with extra treats included for some time to come. Christmas parcels given out over the holiday period have been really welcome and this very generous donation will help to replenish the store, ready for our Clients visits in the weeks to come.
