On November 2, 2014, BAPS Charities volunteers from Dar-es-Salaam conducted a health and food drive at the New Life Orphans Home located a short distance from Dar-es-Salaam. The home was founded in 2001 by Mrs. Mwanaisha Magambo. Currently, 105 children reside in the home, whose ages range from 1 to 18 years. The orphanage provides the all necessities that every child deserves. In addition to meals and housing, the children also receive free education from a nearby school. Looking over the children is currently Mr. Hamadi Magambo. The orphanage is located in the Kigogo area, which is approximately 15 kilometers from Dar es Salaam. The New Life Orphans Home is a locally registered NGO, and is run on aid and support provided by well-wishers.
After welcoming the BAPS Charities volunteers and medical team, Dr. Partha Das and his team (Dr. Smita Bhalia, Dr. Mahesh Taware, Ms. Pal Bhadreshwara, Gauri Taware, Sister Diana and Sister Devotha and Sister Naseem) began the medical checkups. All the children and caretakers were tested for malaria, in addition to a dental checkup, BMI testing, and other tests. Each child was also given an antihelmintic medicine to protect them from worms. 60% of the children also had various skin diseases, all of which were treated.
After the medical checkups and treatment, each child was given a gift packet while the volunteers spent time with the children and playing various games. The volunteers and children had a wonderful day bringing joy to each others’ lives.
